Sesselman's Hat Trick Pushes Women's Lacrosse Past Dominican, 12-11

Box Score ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Mar. 8, 2014) – On Saturday, the Molloy College women's lacrosse team was able to quickly move past its Friday evening loss to Assumption College by defeating Dominican College, 12-11 at the Dean G. Skelos Sports Complex. Home cooking was what the Lions needed as they improved to 2-2 on the season, while the visiting Chargers fell to 0-1 overall.

In an epic game of back-and-forth, see-saw action, the first half didn't see more than six minutes go by without a goal being scored. Dominican had a pair of 3-0 runs in that opening period, but Molloy found its spots and kept up with its guests. At halftime, Molloy trailed, 8-6.

Following a Christina Brennan goal that opened up the second stanza and gave the Chargers a 9-6 lead, the Lions reeled off a 4-0 run as senior Samantha Arlotta (Garden City Park, N.Y.) notched a pair of goals that bookended a marker each from rookie Cooper Sesselman (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) and senior Candice Noakes (Levittown, N.Y.). Those three tallies came within a 10-minute span (25:51 to 15:28) helping Molloy to go ahead, 10-9.

Gina Sparaco tied the game for Dominican 21 seconds later. Freshman Alexa Watson (North Massapequa, N.Y.) answered that tally four minutes later when the Molloy rookie found the back of the netting to put the Lions up, 11-10. With 8:15 left, Emily Murray found the Chargers' equalizer to change the scoreboard to read 11-11.

With 2:24 left in regulation, the Chargers' goalie Brittany Kiernan committed a foul and was forced to position herself behind the Molloy shooter, sophomore Ryan Meyer (East Meadow, N.Y.). With a wide-open, unguarded net, Meyer fired the shot in off the free position, giving Molloy a 12-11 lead. That would end up being the final.

For Molloy, the reiging East Coast Conference Rookie of the Week Sesselman finished with a hat trick, while Noakes and Arlotta netted two goals each. Senior Jessica Teves (Merrick, N.Y.), sophomore Katie O'Brien (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) and rookie Taylor Corcoran (Holbrook, N.Y.) had the other tallies for the Lions. In the cage, sophomore Caroline Winters (Baldwin, N.Y.) surrendered eight goals in the first half, while making three saves. In the second period, junior Laura Vetter (Great River, N.Y.) jumped in between the pipes and made 10 saves, only giving up three goals.

Sparaco had three goals for the Chargers, while Traci-Joan Muniz, Allison Smithwick and Brennan had two apiece. In goal, Kiernan stopped 11 shots in the loss.

Head Coach Tom Campolettano and the Lions return to action on Wednesday, March 12 when they host ECC-opponent Dowling College at the Dean G. Skelos Sports Complex. The opening draw control is set for 6 p.m.  LiveStats and an audio/video broadcast will be available through MolloyLions.com. The pre-game show will begin at 5:45 p.m.
