Softball Falls 7-5 to Southern New Hampshire; Game 2 Washed Out

Box Score ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Mar. 29, 2014) - The Molloy College softball team dropped the opening game of a doubleheader to Southern New Hamsphire University on Saturday, 7-5 in six innings. Game 2 was cancelled as the rain continued to get heavier. With the win, the Penmen improved to 11-4 overall, while the Lions saw their ledger slip to 5-9 on the year.

In the opening inning, Molloy sophomore catcher Milan Botte (San Diego, Calif.) continued her hot hitting as she drove in the first run of the game. Her RBI double to left center brought home junior second baseman Brenda Lee (Corona, Calif.).

After a bases-loaded walk by Molloy senior left fielder Dayna White (East Islip, N.Y.) turned the score to 2-1 in favor of the Lions, the Penmen found their offense rhythm. In the fourth frame, Holly Eicher deposited a three-run homer over the left field fence to give her team a 4-2 lead. Southern New Hampshire added an insurance run in the fifth when Katie Caruso scored on a wild pitch.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, with the rain increasing and the threat of a loss looming in a weather-shortened game, Botte came up big for the Lions yet again. The San Diego native crushed a game-tying three-run homer to left field.

The tie score, however, would be short-lived as the Penmen scored twice in the top of the sixth to take a 7-5 lead. The Lions weren't able to score in their half of the inning, and with the rain pouring down, the game was called and made official after six complete innings.

In the batter's box, senior shortstop Nicolette Sinagra (Brooklyn, N.Y.) was 3-for-4 for Molloy, while Botte went 2-for-2 with four RBIs. Botte is now batting an incredible .513 through 14 games this year. She already has six homers and 18 RBIs in 2014.

Head Coach Susan Cassidy-Lyke and the Lions have announced that Monday's (Mar. 31) doubleheader hosting LeMoyne College has been cancelled. The team will next hit the field on Tuesday, April 1 when the Lions welcome NYIT to Bob Klein Field. First pitch of Game 1 is slated for 3 p.m.  LiveStats and a video webcast will be available right here at MolloyLions.com.
