Baseball Drops Road Contest Versus St. Thomas Aquinas, 7-3

Box Score SPARKILL, N.Y. (Mar. 29, 2014) - The Molloy College baseball team traveled up to Sparkill, N.Y. on Saturday and fell to St. Thomas Aquinas, 7-3 in an East Coast Conference-matchup. Molloy dropped to 6-10 overall, while St. Thomas Aquinas improved to 12-6.

The Lions and Spartans were supposed to play a doubleheader, but inclement weather prevented the start of game two.  The two teams will play a doubleheader tomorrow at the Mitchel Field Athletic Complex.

Sophomore Shea Spitzbarth (Staten Island, N.Y.) got the start for the Lions pitching 6.1 innings, allowing five earned runs on seven hits while striking out six batters.  Spitzbarth received the loss dropping his record to 0-3 on the year.

St. Thomas Aquinas started the game strong, pushing across four runs in the bottom of the second inning.  In the inning, the Spartans only got two hits, but scored runs off of a wild pitch and an RBI groundout.  Stephen Sunday contributed an RBI single for STAC.

It would be 5-0 entering the top of the sixth when the Lions made a game of it.  After three consecutive Lions were hit by pitches to load the bases, junior Kyle Van Duyne (Sayville, N.Y.) hit a two-run double to make it a 5-2 contest.  Freshman Anthony Alberghina (Staten Island, N.Y.) reached base on a fielder's choice scoring fellow rookie Brian Murphy (Elmont, N.Y.), but the Molloy rally would halt there.

The Spartans pushed across two insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh to make it a 7-3 advantage.

Head Coach Joe Fucarino and the Lions return to action tomorrow for the series finale against the Spartans.  First pitch of the twinbill is scheduled for 1 p.m.  You can find LiveStats of both games of the doubleheader at www.MolloyLions.com.
