Baseball Downs St. Thomas Aquinas in Series Opener, 4-1

Box Score UNIONDALE, N.Y. (Mar. 28, 2014) - The Molloy College baseball team opened up its four-game weekend series with St. Thomas Aquinas College on Friday afternoon with a 4-1 victory at Mitchel Field in Uniondale, N.Y.  With the win, the Lions improved to 6-9 overall and 2-3 in the conference, while the Spartans slipped to 11-6 on the year and 4-1 in league play.

Molloy senior starting hurler Max Schonfeld (East Meadow, N.Y.) was absolutely terrific today. The pitcher fired 8.2 innings of one-run ball, scattering nine hits. He struck out six batters. Fellow East Meadow product and sophomore reliever Matt Castaneda came in for the final out with the bases loaded to earn his third save of the season.

On the offensive end, the Lions plated three runs in the third inning. Freshman Ronald Bauer (Hicksville, N.Y.) had an RBI single, while rookie Kevin Podell (Wantagh, N.Y.) and junior John Galanoudis (Farmingdale, N.Y.) followed that up with back-to-back RBI doubles. The fourth run came in the bottom of the sixth frame when junior Kyle Van Duyne (Sayville, N.Y.) drove in J. Galanoudis with a sacrifice fly.

The only Spartans' run came in the eighth inning off an RBI groundout by Rich Baerga.

Head Coach Joe Fucarino and the Lions play two tomorrow as they take on St. Thomas Aquinas in Sparkill, N.Y. continuing their ECC series. First pitch of Game 1 begins at 12 p.m.  LiveStats will be available right here at MolloyLions.com.
