Softball Takes Game 1 from Holy Family; Drops Game 2

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Mar. 23, 2014) - The Molloy College softball team split a doubleheader against non-conference foe Holy Family University on Saturday at Bob Klein FIeld. In Game 1, the Lions received a complete game from sophomore pitcher Tracey Balinskas (Edison, N.J.). The sophomore hurler gave up just one run and whiffed five batters. In Game 2, late-inning runs allowed Holy Family to secure a 4-2 victory. With these decisions, the Lions' record changed to 4-8. The Tigers' ledger morphed to 11-5 overall.

Game 1: Molloy 2, Holy Family 1

The Lions' junior Victoria Gunnels (North Bellmore, N.Y.) plated the first run of the game when she drove in sophomore Milan Botte (San Diego, Calif.) with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth inning. Molloy grabbed an insurance run one frame later as junior Brenda Lee (Corona, Calif.) singled home senior Lauren Alexander (Huntington, N.Y.). The Tigers halved their deficit in the sixth inning when Erin Corrado scored on a wild pitch. That would be the only run the Tigers ended up scoring in the opening contest as Balinskas' pitching proved to be too stingy for Holy Family.

In the batter's box, junior Brianne Catalano (Franklin Square, N.Y.) went a perfect 3-for-3.

Game 2: Holy Family 4, Molloy 2

Molloy scored in the first inning when Botte flied out to centerfield, plating senior Nicolette Sinagra (Brooklyn, N.Y.). Holy Family tied the game in the fourth on an RBI double, before the Lions scored again in the fifth to retake the lead. The Lions' second run came home when Catalano scored on a wild pitch. Holy Family found the equalizing and go-ahead run in the sixth off a two-run double from Samantha Borrelli. The Tigers' Alexis Daubert hit a homer in the top of the seventh to add an insurance run. Despite a bases-loaded effort in the bottom of the seventh, the Lions weren't able to bring home any more runs and fell, 4-2.

Balinskas went 2-for-3 at the dish, while Catalano finished 2-for-3 with a run scored. On the day, Catalano recorded a 5-for-6 performance.

Head Coach Susan Cassidy-Lyke and the Lions return to action on Tuesday when they host East Coast Conference-foe LIU Post at 3 p.m.
