Softball Sweeps Doubleheader from American International

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Mar. 22, 2014) - On Saturday afternoon, the Molloy College softball team came home to Bob Klein Field in Rockville Centre, N.Y., earning two wins in a doubleheader over American International College, 2-1 and 8-6. With the triumphs, the Lions are now 3-7 overall. Following the defeats, the Yellowjackets slipped to 2-8 on the season.

Game 1: Molloy 2, AIC 1

Junior Victoria Gunnels (North Bellmore, N.Y.) put Molloy on the scoreboard first when she drove in senior Dayna White (East Islip, N.Y.) with an RBI double to right centerfield. American International didn't wait long to tie the game, as in the very next inning, the Yellowjackets found the equalizing run with an unearned run. In a see-saw pattern, Molloy answered right back in the sixth. White was on the RBI end this time, plating sophomore catcher Milan Botte (San Diego, Calif.). That run gave the Lions a 2-1 lead, which would be the final score.

In the pitching circle, sophomore Tracey Balinskas (Edison, N.J.) recorded a complete game, striking out seven.

Game 2: Molloy 8, AIC 6

The slugfest started in the first inning when Molloy scored twice. AIC would grab a 3-2 lead in the third inning, before Balinskas stroked a two-run homer to centerfield. A few batters later, Gunnels walked with the bases loaded, which gave Molloy a 5-3 advantage.

Two frames later, the Yellowjackets recorded two runs to tie the game on an RBI single and an RBI double. Molloy didn't let the contest stay tied for long, however, as in the bottom half of the fifth, junior Brianne Catalano (Franklin Square, N.Y.) notched an RBI single. Then senior Nicolette Sinagra (Brooklyn, N.Y.) doubled down the left field line, driving in Catalano and Gunnels. Although AIC scored another run in the sixth inning, it would be the last time the Yellowjackets touched home plate. Molloy secured the top of the seventh, and went on to an 8-6 victory.

Sinagra finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs, while Balinskas went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two driven in.

Head Coach Susan Cassidy-Lyke and the Lions return to the diamond tomorrow when they host Holy Family University in a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m.  LiveStats and a video webcast will be available right here at MolloyLions.com.
