Box Score 2 UNIONDALE, N.Y. (Mar. 22, 2014) - On Saturday, the Molloy College baseball team split a East Coast Conference-doubleheader with Dowling College at Mitchel Field in Uniondale, N.Y. In game 1, the Lions fell to Dowling, 9-6, before defeating the Golden Lions in the second contest, 10-8. With the decisions, the Lions are now 5-8 overall (1-2 ECC), while Dowling is now 11-7 (2-1 ECC).
Game 1: Dowling 9, Molloy 6In the first six innings of the game, Dowling jumped out to a 5-0 lead. Two RBI singles and a two-run homer contributed to that scoring. Molloy would grab two of the runs back in the bottom of the sixth inning, but Dowling took them right back in the seventh and eighth with another four Golden Lions crossing home plate. With two innings left, Dowling led, 9-2.
Molloy would score four times in the bottom of the ninth inning. Freshman
Ryan Dillon (Medford, N.Y.) drove in the first run with an RBI ground-rule double to make the score 9-3. Then sophomore
Nicholas Gonchar (Staten Island, N.Y.) smacked an RBI double, followed by an RBI triple from rookie
Ronald Bauer (Hicksville, N.Y.) and and RBI single by senior
Carlos Guzman (Bloomingburg, N.Y.). However, the ninth-inning rally would fall three runs short as Molloy couldn't bring across any more.
Gonchar finished 2-for-4 at the dish with a run scored and an RBI, while C. Guzman went 2-for-5 with a run scored and a run driven in. On the mound, sophomore starter
Shea Spitzbarth (Staten Island, N.Y.) struggled, throwing 5.1 innings and surrendering five runs (four earned) on six hits. He struck out eight.
Game 2: Molloy 10, Dowling 8The second game of the twinbill treated Molloy much better as the Lions swatted two homers, and had five different players drive in runs. Most of the damage came in the second and third innings when the Lions plated seven runs. Junior
John Galanoudis (Farmingdale, N.Y.) had a solo homer in this game, while sophomore
Deilyn Guzman (East Hampton, N.Y.) blasted a two-run shot.
