Baseball Splits ECC Twinbill with Dowling

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 UNIONDALE, N.Y. (Mar. 22, 2014) - On Saturday, the Molloy College baseball team split a East Coast Conference-doubleheader with Dowling College at Mitchel Field in Uniondale, N.Y.  In game 1, the Lions fell to Dowling, 9-6, before defeating the Golden Lions in the second contest, 10-8. With the decisions, the Lions are now 5-8 overall (1-2 ECC), while Dowling is now 11-7 (2-1 ECC).

Game 1: Dowling 9, Molloy 6

In the first six innings of the game, Dowling jumped out to a 5-0 lead. Two RBI singles and a two-run homer contributed to that scoring. Molloy would grab two of the runs back in the bottom of the sixth inning, but Dowling took them right back in the seventh and eighth with another four Golden Lions crossing home plate. With two innings left, Dowling led, 9-2.

Molloy would score four times in the bottom of the ninth inning. Freshman Ryan Dillon (Medford, N.Y.) drove in the first run with an RBI ground-rule double to make the score 9-3. Then sophomore Nicholas Gonchar (Staten Island, N.Y.) smacked an RBI double, followed by an RBI triple from rookie Ronald Bauer (Hicksville, N.Y.) and and RBI single by senior Carlos Guzman (Bloomingburg, N.Y.). However, the ninth-inning rally would fall three runs short as Molloy couldn't bring across any more.

Gonchar finished 2-for-4 at the dish with a run scored and an RBI, while C. Guzman went 2-for-5 with a run scored and a run driven in. On the mound, sophomore starter Shea Spitzbarth (Staten Island, N.Y.) struggled, throwing 5.1 innings and surrendering five runs (four earned) on six hits. He struck out eight.

Game 2: Molloy 10, Dowling 8

The second game of the twinbill treated Molloy much better as the Lions swatted two homers, and had five different players drive in runs. Most of the damage came in the second and third innings when the Lions plated seven runs. Junior John Galanoudis (Farmingdale, N.Y.) had a solo homer in this game, while sophomore Deilyn Guzman (East Hampton, N.Y.) blasted a two-run shot.

Freshman Brian Murphy (Elmont, N.Y.), freshman Kevin Podell (Wantagh, N.Y.) and J. Galanoudis all had two RBIs, while D. Guzman plated three of his teammates, going 3-for-4 at the dish with three runs scored. Rookie Anthony Alberghina (Staten Island, N.Y.) went 2-for-4 in the batter's box with two runs scored and an RBI.

Head Coach Joe Fucarino and the Lions return to action tomorrow when they wrap up their series against Dowling at Golden Lions Field in Brookhaven, N.Y.  First pitch is slated for 12 p.m.
