Box Score CLERMONT, Fla. (Mar. 17, 2014) - On Monday, the Molloy College softball team was upended by Merrimack College, 5-4 in Clermont, Fla. The game lasted only five innings due to rain. The second game of the day, which was scheduled against West Chester University of Pa., was cancelled due to inclement weather. The Lions' record is now 1-4 on the 2014 season.
Behind 4-0 in the top of the third inning, junior second baseman
Brenda Lee (Corona, Calif.) doubled in fellow junior
Brianne Catalano (Franklin Square, N.Y.). The Warriors answered right back, however, scoring in the bottom of the third to increase their lead to 5-1.
The four-run deficit didn't hamper Molloy's spirit as the Lions plated three runs in the top of the fifth. Catalano started it off with an RBI single, followed by a
Lauren Alexander (Huntington, N.Y.) RBI single, and culminating with a run scoring when freshman
Erin Clinton (Long Beach, Calif.) reached on an error. Unfortunately, the Lions couldn't get across the tying run and fell to Merrimack, 5-4.
For the Lions, sophomore catcher
Milan Botte (San Diego, Calif.), who was named the East Coast Conference Player of the Week today, went 2-for-3 at the plate, while Catalano finished 2-for-2 at the dish. As a team, the Lions outhit the Warriors, 8-6.
In the pitching circle, freshman
Chelsea Hawks (Wading River, N.Y.) pitched all four innings, surrendering five runs (four earned). She struck out three batters.
