(Mar. 15, 2014) - On Saturday, the Molloy College baseball team began its final spring training trip with a doubleheader against Merrimack College and Southern New Hampshire University in Cary, N.C. at the USA Baseball Complex. In the opening game versus Merrimack, Molloy won, 3-2. In game 2, the Lions fell to SNHU, 6-1. The split runs Molloy's overall record to 4-6.
Molloy 3, Merrimack 2The game remained scoreless until the seventh inning when Merrimack scored and took a 1-0 lead. In the bottom of the eighth frame, the Lions plated three runs to take a 3-1 advantage. Freshman

Brian Murphy (Elmont, N.Y.) to cross home plate. The Lions found the go-ahead and eventual game-winning run when junior
Kyle Van Duyne (Sayville, N.Y.) drove in two runs with an RBI single as Podell and junior
John Galanoudis (Farmingdale, N.Y.) scored.
Although Merrimack scored once in the ninth to trim Molloy's lead to just one run, the Lions' sophomore
Matt Castaneda (East Meadow, N.Y.) was able to hold on for the save. Senior
Max Schonfeld (East Meadow, N.Y.) started the game for the Lions and pitched seven innings, giving up just one run on five hits. He struck out six. Senior
Anthony Eichhorn (Sayville, N.Y.) earned the win in relief.
Southern N.H. 6, Molloy 1Southern New Hampshire was able to plate five runs in the first inning, setting the tone for the rest of the game. Molloy scored its only run of the contest in the third when Podell doubled in fellow rookie
Ronald Bauer (HIcksville, N.Y.). On the hill, junior
Alex Brosnan (Farmingdale, N.Y.) struggled, surrendering six runs (five earned) in 5.1 innings. Against SNHU, the Lions were only able to muster four hits.
Following Sunday's cancellation of the game with Pace University due to inclement weather, Head Coach
Joe Fucarino and the Lions return to the diamond on Tuesday, Mar. 18 when they close out their North Carolina trip versus the University of New Haven. First pitch is slated for 11 a.m.
