Box Score BOCA RATON, Fla. (Mar. 10, 2014) - The Molloy College baseball team ended its annual spring training trip to Florida on a positive note as the Lions defeated Bloomfield College, 11-4 on Monday. The win improved Molloy's overall record to 3-5.
Sophomore
Nicholas Gonchar (Staten Island, N.Y.) started things off in the very first inning as he drove in senior
Carlos Guzman (Bloomingburg, N.Y.) with an RBI single. Ahead 2-1 after a
Kyle Van Duyne (Sayville, N.Y.) RBI groundout in the second frame,
Carlos Guzman roped a two-run double in the fourth inning to further cushion his team's lead.
The Lions opened the floodgates in the fifth inning as seven runs crossed the plate. Gonchar had a two-run double, which was followed by a
Deilyn Guzman (East Hampton, N.Y.) RBI double, a
Ronald Bauer (Hicksville, N.Y.) two-run triple, a
Carlos Guzman RBI single, and a Van Duyne RBI single. Bloomfield scored another three runs in the game, but it was far from a comeback as the Lions secured the 11-4 victory.
On the hill for Molloy, senior
Alex Miden (Ozone Park, N.Y.) went five innings and gave up one run, which was unearned. He struck out six. In relief, sophomore
Peter Vath (Selden, N.Y.), junior
Lou Liberatore (Blue Point, N.Y.), freshman
Sean Gordon (Levittown, N.Y.) and
Deilyn Guzman combined for four shutout innings.
On the day,
Carlos Guzman finished 3-for-5 with three RBIs, while Bauer went a perfect 4-for-4 with two RBIs. Gonchar had a 2-for-5 day with three runs driven in.
Head Coach
Joe Fucarino and the Lions return home to New York before heading down South once again this weekend. On Saturday, March 15, Molloy will take on Merrimack College and Southern New Hampshire University in Cary, N.C. These games kickoff the team's final spring training venture.
