Box Score DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 1, 2014) – The Molloy College women's lacrosse team opened the 2014 season Saturday afternoon with a 10-8 win over East Coast Conference-foe Mercy College at Mavericks Field. Molloy is now 1-0 on the season and in ECC play, while Mercy fell to 1-1 overall and 0-1 in the league.
The start of the 2014 season was delayed for Molloy, as its first two match-ups were cancelled in February due to weather-related issues. The rocky start didn't seem to bother the Lions too much, however, as they opened the game with a goal by sophomore attacker Ryan Meyer (East Meadow, N.Y.) on a free position shot at the 27:05 mark.
Mercy tied up the game over seven minutes later, but the Lions quickly responded with another free position shot goal by junior attacker Casey Naab (Floral Park, N.Y.) 32 seconds later. The two teams traded goals for the next seven and a half minutes, until Mercy regained the lead with a goal from Michelle Tiernan, her second of the half, at the 11:45 mark. Tiernan would score one more goal for the Mavericks in the first stanza, helping her team to a 6-4 halftime lead.
But the momentum certainly shifted at the start of the second half, as Molloy's freshman midfielder Cooper Sesselman (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) and senior midfielder Candice Noakes (Levittown, N.Y.) each scored goals in the first three minutes of play. Mercy was able to score two more goals before the 20-minute mark, but that would be all the Mavericks could muster for the rest of the game.
Molloy sophomore goalie Caroline Winters (Baldwin, N.Y.) had six of her 10 saves in the final 20 minutes of the game, shutting out Mercy in that timeframe. Capitalizing on this strong defense, Sesselman, Noakes and senior midfielder Samantha Arlotta (Garden City Park, N.Y.) contributed three more goals for the Lions, leading to the 10-8 win.
Sesselman led Molloy with three goals on three shots on goal. Tiernan contributed three goals for Mercy.
