Women’s Basketball Ends Regular Season with 73-64 Loss to NYIT

Box Score

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (March 1, 2014) – On Saturday afternoon, the Molloy College women's basketball team fell to the New York Institute of Technology, 73-64 in the Lions' final East Coast Conference regular-season game. The loss gave Molloy (14-13, 11-9 ECC) a fifth-place seeding in the upcoming conference tournament, where they will again face NYIT (17-9, 13-7 ECC), who ended the season in fourth place.

The Bears got the better of Molloy earlier this season, defeating the Lions 90-73 in their first meeting in January. Despite this, Molloy was able to keep the beginning of the game close. A made three-point jumper by senior guard Kelly Guerriero (Floral Park, N.Y.) put the Lions up 11-10 at the 11:56 mark. But the Bears were able to put together an 11-0 run midway through the first stanza, establishing a 10-point lead. NYIT guard Shannon Duer scored nine of those points, finishing the half with 13.

Though NYIT shot just 22.9% in the first half, it was able to maintain its lead for the rest of the stanza due to equally poor shooting by Molloy. The Lions also compiled 10 turnovers in the half, helping the Bears to a 32-24 halftime advantage.

Molloy was able to shutdown Duer in the second half, but NYIT guard Demitra Apergis took over where Duer left off, contributing 11 of her 16 points in the second stanza. The Lions were again plagued by errors in the second half, turning the ball over 11 times to NYIT's six. The Bears held a double-digit lead for most of the second half and rolled on to the 73-64 victory.

Guerriero finished the game with a team-high 18 points. Junior guard/forward Nicole Arnone (Staten Island, N.Y.) added eight points, 16 rebounds, two assists, one steal, and one block for Molloy.

Apergis scored 16 points for the Bears, while adding six assists, and four steals. Alex Venuto contributed 14 points for NYIT.

UP NEXT: Head Coach Kate Lynch and the Lions will meet the New York Institute of Technology on Tuesday, March 4 in the play-in game of East Coast Conference postseason tournament in Old Westbury, N.Y. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.  LiveStats and an audio/video broadcast will be available at www.MolloyLions.com, with the pre-game show getting underway at 6:45 p.m.
