(Feb. 21, 2014) - On Friday afternoon, the Molloy College baseball team opened its 2014 season with a 4-3 defeat to Merrimack College at the Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, S.C. With the win, the Warriors improved to 2-0 overall, while the Lions slipped to 0-1 on the young season.
Merrimack opened the game by plating two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Frank Crinel drove a two-run homer to center field, tagging Molloy senior starter
Alex Miden (Ozone Park, N.Y.) for his first two runs of the year. Two innings later, Molloy came back and tied the game. It started when
Carlos Guzman (Bloomingburg, N.Y.) blasted a solo shot to right field, and then four batters later,
Kevin Podell notched an RBI single, driving home junior
John Galanoudis (Farmingdale, N.Y.).
Carlos Guzman recorded his second RBI of the game in the fourth frame when he brought home junior
Zach Norton (West Chester, Pa.) on a sacrifice fly. Molloy went up, 3-2.
The Warriors tied the game and then took a 4-3 lead in innings six and seven on a sacrifice fly and an RBI ground-rule double, respectively. In the Molloy half of the seventh and ninth innings, the Lions left a runner on base and wasn't able to find the equalizing run. Merrimack improved to 2-0 with the 4-3 win.
For Molloy, Norton and
Carlos Guzman each had two hits to start the 2014 campaign, while the latter had two runs batted in. On the pitching mound, freshman
Bobby Kelly (Mineola, N.Y.) hurled 1.2 shutout innings of relief with one strikeout.
