Box Score ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Feb. 12, 2014) – On Wednesday night, the Molloy College women's basketball team posted an 87-62 victory over Mercy College in an East Coast Conference-matchup at Quealy Gymnasium. With the win, the Lions improved to 11-11 on the season and 8-7 in the league. The Mavericks dropped to 2-19 overall and 1-15 in the ECC.
After a somewhat slow start, Molloy took control of the lead on a made layup by junior forward
Megan Lonergan (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) at the 15:33 mark. The Lions continued to dominate the half, boosted by senior guard
Kelly Guerriero (Floral Park, N.Y.), who scored 18 points in the first stanza. Guerriero went 6-for-7 from behind the arc and also grabbed four boards. Molloy held a 45-34 lead at halftime.
The Mavericks were able to chip away at the Lions' double-digit advantage early in the second stanza. A steal and layup by Mercy's Riana Ward at the 14:53 mark — followed by two made free throws from Tanayzha Augustine 20 seconds later — cut the deficit to seven. But that was the closest the Mavericks would get for the rest of the game.
Molloy scored six unanswered points midway through the half, extending the lead to 18. The Lions then went on a 14-3 run, capped off by two made free throws from freshman guard
Taylor Gallagher (Arverne, N.Y.), to go up 26, the largest lead of the game. Molloy coasted to the final buzzer, ending with an 87-62 victory.
Guerriero finished the game with 21 points and five rebounds for Molloy. Guerriero's seven three-pointers fell one shy of tying the program record (Amanda Barlett recorded eight treys in January 2012). Sophomore guard
Alexia O'Connor (Centerport, N.Y.) contributed 15 points, four boards, and six assists.
Maria Nardulli led Mercy with 21 points. Augustine added 10 points, 14 rebounds, three blocks, and two assists for the Mavericks.
