Women's Basketball Charges Past Dowling, 69-64

Box Score OAKDALE, N.Y. (Feb. 1, 2014) – On Saturday afternoon, the Molloy College women's basketball team overcame the Dowling College Golden Lions with a 69-64 victory at Dowling Gymnasium. The win gave Molloy a 10-9 record overall and a 7-5 record in the East Coast Conference, while Dowling dropped to 7-10 on the season and 6-6 in league play.

Dowling jumped out to an early lead, going up seven points on a made layup by Christine Verrelle at the 16:22 mark. But charging forward, Molloy sparked a 15-0 run over the next three minutes. Though the Lions would hold on to the lead for the rest of first stanza, Dowling made a late push, scoring eight points in the last two minutes of the half. Senior guard Kelly Guerriero (Floral Park, N.Y.) contributed 14 points on 56.0% shooting, but the Lions went into the intermission up by just one point.

Dowling's Kristen McMahon scored first in the second half, grabbing the lead back from Molloy. The Lions responded quickly, notching the next nine points. Molloy would go up by as much as 12 in the half, but, again, Dowling was able to close the gap late in the game.

A made free throw by Dowling's Krstina Surlan cut Molloy's lead to three with 50 seconds left. The Lions went back up by five on two made foul shots by junior guard Sabrina Padro (Bronx, N.Y.), but another Surlan free throw made it a one-possession game at the 19-second mark. A second later, Padro sank two more from the free-throw line, giving Dowling the ball with 18 seconds left to play. Down five, Dowling's Verrelle was able to make two three-point attempts before the buzzer, but was unsuccessful, and the Lions held on for the win, 69-64.

Junior forward Megan Lonergan (Rockville Centre, N.Y) paced Molloy in the second half, contributing 12 points and seven rebounds. She finished the game with 14 points, 10 rebounds, and two blocks. Sophomore guard Alex Hampton (Baldwin, N.Y.) led the Lions with 15 points.

Verrelle contributed 17 points, four assists, and two steals for Dowling, while McMahon added 11 points and 11 boards.
