Women's Basketball Falls to St. Thomas Aquinas, 65-59

Box Score ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Dec. 3, 2014) - The Molloy College women's basketball squad welcomed in St. Thomas Aquinas College to Quealy Gymnasium on Wednesday night to open both East Coast Conference-play and the 2014-15 home schedule. Despite a well-balanced and spread-out offensive performance this evening, the Lions were defeated by the Spartans, 65-59, to slip to 3-2 overall and 0-1 in the league. With the win, the Spartans improved to 3-3 (1-0 ECC).

Incredibly, the first half saw six scoring ties and neither team led by more than three points, except for one occassion -- at the 2:32 mark when the Lions led by five points for 14 seconds. At halftime, the Spartans led, 32-31.

The second stanza started off in bizarre fashion as the Lions were called for 10 fouls by the 12:27 mark -- while the Spartans had zero fouls. This second period had six scoring ties as well, in addition to no team harboring an advantage larger than six points. Tonight's contest was the epitome of a back-and-forth battle, with both teams continuing to trade bucket-for-bucket.

Molloy was down by four points with 1:33 remaining in the game, before a turnover caused the Spartans to score a basket to up their lead to 63-57. Following a timeout and a slew of substitutions, Lions' sophomore guard Aliyah McDonald (Hempstead, N.Y.) drove in a lay-up to cut her team's deficit back down to four. However, the Lions just ran out of time as the Spartans grabbed the 65-59 victory.

For Molloy, junior Kimani Jackson (Dix Hills, N.Y.) scored a team-high 14 points, while McDonald had 13. Also in double digits tonight was junior Ally Leftridge (Melville, N.Y.), who added 12 points. Senior wing Nicole Arnone (Staten Island, N.Y.) brought down a game-best 12 rebounds.

For St. Thomas Aquinas, Jenna Erickson led the game with 19 points, while Samantha Burden contributed 13.

UP NEXT: Head Coach Kate Lynch and the Lions return to the hardwood on Friday, December 12 when they play at Daemen College beginning at 6 p.m. Check back right here on MolloyLions.com for links to LiveStats and a video broadcast.
