Women's Basketball Bested by Florida Southern, 81-63

Box Score LAKELAND, Fla. (Dec. 19, 2014) - The Molloy College women's basketball team was defeated in the first game of the Terrace Hotel Classic versus Florida Southern College, which is the host of the tournament, on Friday afternoon, 81-63. The loss drops the Lions to 4-5 overall, while the Moccasins improved to 6-3 on the campaign.

In the first half, the Lions kept their deficit to single digits through the first 13 minutes of the contest. However, for the rest of the period until halftime the Moccasins' lead was above 10, and in the second stanza, the Lions were able to cut the deficit to single digits only once, highlighting the strong offensive play of Florida Southern. Molloy's sharpshooters had trouble from beyond the arc as they went 0-for-8, while only converting 21 of their 31 free throw attempts. This dangerous combination resulted in the Lions never holding a lead today.

Molloy was led offensively by junior forward Ally Leftridge (Melville, N.Y.), who continues to put together a strong season, as she scored 18 points on 6-13 shooting. Senior center Megan Lonergan (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) added 10 points for the Lions on 4-6 shooting from field goal range.

Florida Southern was paced by guard Syndi Payne, who also netted 18 points (6-13 from the field).

Head Coach Kate Lynch and the Lions wrap up their Florida trip -- as well as the 2014 calendar year -- tomorrow afternoon when they play the University of Tampa at 1 p.m.  LiveStats and a video broadcast of all the action will be available right here on MolloyLions.com.
