Women's Basketball Falls to Daemen in ECC Action, 72-60

Box Score AMHERST, N.Y. (Dec. 12, 2014) - The Molloy College women's basketball team lost to Daemen College in a hard-fought game on Friday night in Amherst, N.Y. by the final score of 72-60. The loss drops the Lions to 3-3 on the season (0-2 in East Coast Conference-play). The Wildcats improve to 1-2 on the season and 1-0 in the league.
 
In the first half, the Lions were led by junior forward Ally Leftridge (Melville, N.Y.) who had 10 points and junior guard Alexia O'Connor (Centerport, N.Y.), who also netted 10 points.
 
At halftime, the score was tied 29-29, but the Wildcats proved to be too much extending their lead to double-digits in the second half. The Lions brought the deficit down to single-digits, but was never able to take the lead in the second stanza.
 
In that second period, the Wildcats at one point led, 46-31 after a three-pointer conversion. The Lions answered with a trey from sophomore guard Maggie Salomone (Narragansett, R.I.) to begin to attempt a chip-away comeback, but Daemen held them off. A few minutes later, Molloy responded with a 12-5 run and cut Daemen's lead to 11 points with 8.51 left. The Lions eventually chopped Daemen's advantage down to six after a putback by sophomore Aliyah McDonald (Hempstead, N.Y.) with 5:53 left. However, in the final five minutes of regulation, Daemen was able to hold off any further Molloy comeback attempts. 
 
Leftridge paced the Lions with 20 points (7-19 shooting) and was 6-9 from the charity stripe. Leftridge also added 12 rebounds. O'Connor finished the game with 12 points (5-12 shooting).
 
For Daemen, senior forward Shy Britton led all scorers with 21 points (9-16 shooting) and was 3-5 from the foul line. Sophomore forward Natalie Galus chipped in 12 total rebounds and 10 points for the Wildcats.

WELCOME ABOARD: Freshman guard Shannon Barrett (Middle Village, N.Y.) made her collegiate debut tonight...she logged two minutes on the floor and grabbed an offensive rebound...Barrett went 0-for-4 from the three-point line.

SCOUTING THE REDHAWKS: Roberts Wesleyan enter's tomorrow game with a 4-2 overall record and an 0-1 ledger in the ECC...In last year's meetings versus the Redhawks, the Lions split...Molloy won on December 22, 2013 by the score of 90-71...In that contest, Kelly Guerriero netted 23 points and nailed six of her 14 three-point attempts, while O'Connor and senior wing Nicole Arnone (Staten Island, N.Y.) added 15 and 14 points, respectively...Roberts Wesleyan defeated Molloy to even up the season series on February 8, 2014 by the final of 68-52...In that one, O'Connor poured in 17 points.
