Ally Leftridge (Melville, N.Y.), the Molloy College women's basketball team improved to 3-1 overall with an 80-48 trouncing of Felician College on Day 2 of the 2nd Annual Regina Rivera Memorial Tournament at Dominican College in Orangeburg, N.Y. With the loss, the Golden Falcons fell to 1-4 on the campaign.
Not only did the opening half see Molloy continue to increase its lead as it drew closer to halftime, but it also saw the Golden Falcons hold their final lead of the game with 14:54 remaining. With 42 seconds left, the Lions posted a 20-point advantage, which was their highwater-mark for the first period. A basket by Felician with 25 seconds left before the buzzer changed the score to 39-21 as the Lions headed into the locker room with the lead.
Molloy continued to pile it on in the second half, never leading by less than 16 points and reaching its largest lead of 37 points (80-43, 2:06 remaining). Over the final 10 minutes of the game, the Golden Falcons kept up with the Lions, scoring 13 points to Molloy's 16, but the Lions' massive lead from the opening half through the first part of the second stanza was just too much to overcome.
Leading the Lions was Leftridge, who poured in 19 points and grabbed five rebounds, followed by junior guard
Alexia O'Connor (Centerport, N.Y.) and her 15 points. O'Connor was 3-for-8 from downtown. Senior center
Megan Lonergan (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) contributed eight points and five boards, while senior guard/forward
Nicole Arnone (Staten Island, N.Y.) added seven points and six rebounds.
Eliana Scanlon led the Golden Falcons with 13 points, while Ashley Morris and Mary Chrisholm added 11 and 10 points, respectively.
HOT START: Molloy has posted its best start since 2011-12 when the Lions also went 3-1 in its opening four games...That year, the Lions defeated Merrimack College, Chestnut Hill College and Concordia College, while falling to Stonehill College.
LEFTRIDGE THE LEADER: Leftridge recorded a career-high 19 points this afternoon...Her previous career-best of 14 points occured on 1/25/14 when Molloy loss to NYIT, 90-73.
