Box Score DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Jan. 8, 2014) – On Wednesday night, the Molloy College women's basketball team defeated Mercy College, 92-88 in an East Coast Conference-matchup at Mercy Gymnasium. With the win, the Lions improved to 8-4 (5-1 ECC), while the Mavericks fell to 2-9 (1-5 ECC).
Molloy dominated the first half, jumping out to a 28-11 lead in the first seven minutes of play. On a made free throw by junior forward
Allison Smith (Blairstown, N.J.) at the 9:20 mark, Molloy went ahead by 20, its largest lead of the game. Senior guard
Kelly Guerriero (Floral Park, N.Y.) also went 4-for-4 from the three-point line in the first half, scoring 12 of her team-high 21 points. The Lions led 45-34 at the break.
However, the Mavericks were poised for a comeback in the second stanza, cutting the lead to five at the 18:28 mark. During the next several minutes, Molloy regained its double-digit advantage, but Mercy continued to respond, going on a 12-0 run midway through the half. Mavericks' guard Maggie Salomone contributed nine points during the run, hitting three three-pointers in less than a minute.
Despite this change in momentum, Mercy was unable to take the lead away from the Lions. Junior guard
Sabrina Padro (Bronx, N.Y.) helped Molloy fend off the Mavericks, contributing 10 of her 14 points in the second half and going 3-for-3 from the floor and 4-for-4 from the free-throw line. Freshman guard
Aliyah McDonald (Hempstead, N.Y.) also scored 11 points in the second stanza, leading to the 92-88 victory.
For Molloy, junior guard/forward
Nicole Arnone (Staten Island, N.Y.) contributed a double-double, with 16 points, 16 rebounds, five assists, and three steals.
For Mercy, Salomone netted 32 points, while guard Maria Nardulli added 19 points and five steals.
