(Jan. 30, 2014) – The Molloy College women's basketball team broke a four-game losing streak Thursday night, defeating the University of Bridgeport, 91-74 at Quealy Gymnasium. The Lions improved to 9-9 overall and 6-5 in the East Coast Conference, while the Purple Knights dropped to 5-12 on the season and 3-8 in league play.
Led by the sharp shooting of senior guard
Kelly Guerriero (Floral Park, N.Y.), Molloy broke out to a double-digit lead early in the first half. Guerriero went 5-for-9 from field-goal range and 4-for-7 from behind the arc in the first stanza, contributing 14 of her team-high 20 points. The Lions led the Purple Knights at halftime, 43-31.
Molloy started the second half on a 12-0 run ignited by sophomore guard
Alexia O'Connor (Centerport, N.Y.), who contributed seven points in the first two minutes. The Lions went up by 24, their largest lead of the game, on a made free throw by junior forward
Allison Smith (Blairstown, N.J.) at the 17:19 mark. The Purple Knights were never able to close the gap, despite a game-high 28 points from Jennifer Kucukkaya, and they trailed by 20 or more for the majority of the second stanza. Molloy claimed the victory in the end, 91-74.
Sophomore guard/forward
Kimani Jackson (Dix Hills, N.Y) added 20 points for the Lions, while Smith notched a double-double, contributing 10 points, 11 boards, four assists, and two blocks.
Aziza Patterson scored 12 points for Bridgeport.
