Women's Basketball Falls to NYIT, 90-73

Box Score ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Jan. 25, 2014) - On Saturday afternoon, the Molloy College women's basketball team lost to the New York Institute of Technology, 90-73 at Quealy Gymnasium in Rockville Centre, N.Y.  With the win, the Bears improved to 11-5 overall and 7-3 in the East Coast Conference, while the Lions slipped to 8-8 on the season and 5-4 in the league.

Prior to the 2:23 mark in the first quarter, no team led by more than six points. It was a tightly-contested matchup throughout the opening stanza. The two clubs traded buckets in those final two minutes with the action culminating on a buzzer-beating three-pointer from junior forward Megan Lonergan (Rockville Centre, N.Y.). Sophomore guard Alex Hampton (Baldwin, N.Y.) had the assist. NYIT held the lead at halftime, 40-36.

Five minutes into the second period, Molloy trailed by two points. The Bears were then able to reel off a 10-2 run to grab a 59-49 advantage. The closest the Lions would get for the remainder of the game would be eight points, although NYIT quickly built its previous double-digit lead back up. The Bears, on 46.9% shooting from the floor, led by 14 or more points in the final five minutes of the contest.

For the Lions, senior guard Kelly Guerriero (Floral Park, N.Y.), sophomore forward Ally Leftridge (Melville, N.Y.) and Lonergan all had 14 points, while junior guard/forward Nicole Arnone (Staten Island, N.Y.) brought down a team-high nine rebounds. Hampton dished out a game-best six assists.

For the Bears, Rebecca Romeo scored 30 points to lead the contest, while Dina Ragab and Demitra Apergis netted 12 each. Shannon Duer added five points and 11 rebounds.

UP NEXT: Head Coach Kate Lynch and the Lions return to the hardwood on Tuesday, Jan. 28 when they play at ECC-rival Queens College. The opening tipoff is slated for 5:30 p.m.

QUEENS QUICK HIT: The Knights are currently 11-5 overall and 7-3 in the conference, 2.5 games up on Molloy in the league standings.
