Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. (Jan. 15, 2014) - Trailing the University of D.C. in the East Coast Conference standings by one game, the Molloy College women's basketball team ventured down to our nation's capital for a battle with the Firebirds. Despite 30 points from junior guard/forward
Nicole Arnone (Staten Island, N.Y.) and sophomore guard
Alexia O'Connor (Centerport, N.Y.), the Lions faltered against UDC, 84-68 to fall to 8-6 overall and 5-2 in the league. With the win, the Firebirds improved to 10-3 on the season and 6-1 in the ECC.
With 9:31 remaining in the first half, Molloy held its largest lead of the period at 27-15. Over the next five minutes, the Firebirds fired off a 12-0 run to tie the score. ShaKena Williams drained a pair of three-pointers in the burst to help UDC jump back into the game. The Firebirds grabbed a one-point lead 46 seconds before the intermission.
The score was tied twice in the beginning parts of the second half. The 8:14 mark would end up being the final time the Lions trailed by single digits (62-53). From that point on, UDC sunk nine of its 10 free throws down the stretch, helping to seal the 84-68 win.
For Molloy, Arnone had 17 points, while O'Connor scored 13. Those two, along with senior guard
Kelly Guerriero (Floral Park, N.Y.), nailed three three-pointers apiece. Arnone and O'Connor each had three steals.
For UDC, Telisha Turner netted 24 points, while Denikka Brent recorded 19 points and 13 rebounds.
