Women's Soccer Downs Daemen for First Win of Season, 3-1

Box Score AMHERST, N.Y. (Sept. 22, 2013) - On Sunday, the Molloy College women's soccer team defeated East Coast Conference-opponent Daemen College, 3-1 in Amherst, N.Y. With the win, the Lions improved to 1-5 on the season and 1-1 in the ECC. Following the defeat, the Wildcats slipped to 3-3 overall and 0-2 in the conference.

The Lions jumped on the scoreboard early when redshirt-junior Allison Sloper (Williston Park, N.Y.) scored in the game's sixth minute. Sloper scored when she deflected the ball into the goal off a rebound.

In the 20th minute, Daemen's Samantha Engel received a pass from Kacey Bougard and fired in a low shot inside the right post to even the score at 1-1.

After halftime, Molloy continued to put the pressure on Daemen when sophomore Alicia Mercurio (Williston Park, N.Y.) notched a goal in the 49th minute of regulation. Just like Sloper's goal, Mercurio scored on a deflection off a rebound. The Lions would record their final goal of the game when Sloper fed the ball to rookie Danielle Valente (South Setauket, N.Y.). Valente beat the Daemen goalkeeper with a low shot from the middle of the box.

For Molloy, junior netminder Nicole DellaPorta (West Babylon, N.Y.) made three saves, while Daemen goalkeeper Kathryn Haessner stopped seven shots.

Molloy pounded Daemen in the shots category (18-7), and held the edge in corner kicks (5-2).

Head Coach Danny Longo and his team returns to the field on Saturday, Sept. 28 when the Lions play at ECC-rival Queens (N.Y.) College. Game time is slated for 11:30 a.m. in Flushing, N.Y.
