Box Score ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Dec. 22, 2013) - On Sunday afternoon, the Molloy College women's basketball squad had a few stellar individual performances that combined for a winning team effort as the Lions bested Roberts Wesleyan College, 90-71 at Quealy Gymnasium in Rockville Centre, N.Y. Senior guard
Kelly Guerriero (Floral Park, N.Y.) poured in 23 points, sophomore guard
Alex Hampton (Baldwin, N.Y.) dished out a season-high nine assists, and junior guard/forward
Nicole Arnone (Staten Island, N.Y.) recorded a double-double (14 points, 12 rebounds) to help power Molloy to victory.
With the win, the Lions improved their overall ledger to 7-3 (4-1 ECC). Meanwhile, following the defeat, the Redhawks slipped to 5-5 on the season and 1-4 in the league.
Molloy jumped out to a 9-0 lead after 2:09 elasped in the first half, and from that point on the team didn't look back. A remarkable 31 points would wind up being the largest margin of a lead for Molloy in the opening period, as the Lions' offense was firing on all cylinders. The team came out hot trying to erase the memory of the heartbreaking loss on Friday night to Daemen College, 88-86 in overtime.
After upping their lead to 35 points (82-47) at the 9:25 mark of the second half, the Lions never led by less than 18 points. The Redhawks closed out the game on a 5-1 run, but it was far too little and way too late.
For the game, the Lions were led by Guerriero's 23 points, which included the senior nailing six three-pointers in 14 chances. Sophomore guard
Alexia O'Connor (Centerport, N.Y.) had 15 points, while junior guard
Sabrina Padro (Bronx, N.Y.) notched 10 off the bench.
For the Redhawks, Marissa Sell had 19 points and 11 rebounds, while Chelsea Sanders and Carneisha Henry netted 11 and 10 points, respectively.
NEAR RECORDS: Hampton's nine assists fell two shy of her own career-high, as well as the program-high, that she herself set last season vs. Mercy College (2/20/13)...Guerriero's six made-three-pointers were two shy of tying Amanda Bartlett's record for most treys in a single game (1/28/12 vs. Queens College)...the team's 90 points were eight shy of tying the program's record for single game scoring output (98 vs. LIU Brooklyn on 11/20/90).
