Box Score ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Nov. 30, 2013) - On Saturday afternoon, the Molloy College women's basketball team received double-digit scoring performances from four different players to push past Queens College in its 2013-14 East Coast Conference opener, 70-66 at Quealy Gymnasium in Rockville Centre, N.Y. With the win, the hosts improved to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in the league. Meanwhile, Queens dropped to 4-2 on the season and 0-1 in the ECC.
Over the opening 12 minutes of the game, the contest saw four occasions where the score was tied, as both teams didn't hold a lead larger than four points. That then changed, as from the 8:16 mark to the 1:59 mark, the Lions built up a 38-25 lead. The two clubs headed into halftime with the Lions ahead, 43-31.
The Knights' coaching staff must have given a huge morale boost during the intermission, as Queens came out of the locker room firing. By the 14:44 mark, the Knights had knocked down their deficit to just three points (49-46). The Knights would have to wait six minutes from that point forward to grab their first lead of the second stanza. With 8:22 remaining in regulation, Kasheema Besley scored a lay-up to put Queens up, 57-56.
At 6:50, the Knights increased their lead to 64-56, which was their largest of the second period. From that moment on, the Lions reeled off a remarkable 14-2 run to seal a 70-66 conference-victory. Junior
Sabrina Padro (Bronx, N.Y.) converted on six free throws during that burst, while sophomore
Alex Hampton (Baldwin, N.Y.) scored five of the run's other eight points.
For Molloy, Hampton and sophomore
Kimani Jackson (Dix Hills, N.Y.) netted 13 points each for the team-high, while Padro and junior
Nicole Arnone (Staten Island, N.Y.) added 10 each. Padro led the board-grabbers with seven rebounds, while freshman
Aliyah McDonald (Hempstead, N.Y.) recorded three assists.
For Queens, sisters MacKenzie and Madison Rowland each scored 15 points to pace the contest, while Marie Byrnes contributed 14 points. Madison Rowland had four steals.
