Women's Basketball Bests Philadelphia in Home Opener, 67-60

Box Score ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Nov. 23, 2013) - On Saturday afternoon, the Molloy College women's basketball team jumped back on the right side of .500 when it defeated Philadelphia University in its 2013-14 home opener at Quealy Gymnasium, 67-60. Sophomores Alexia O'Connor (Centerport, N.Y.) and Kimani Jackson (Dix Hills, N.Y.), and junior Sabrina Padro (Bronx, N.Y.) combined for 33 points -- each scoring 11 each to pace the squad as the Lions improved to 3-2 overall. With the loss, the Rams fell to 2-2 on the young season.

With 7:10 left in the opening period, Molloy had built up a 27-16 advantage, following a three-pointer from O'Connor. Remarkably, the Rams scored 14 unanswered points over the next five minutes to storm back into the game. Philadelphia's Bria Young scored five of those 14 points off a trey and a pair of free throws. Molloy senior guard Kelly Guerriero (Floral Park, N.Y.) drove in a lay-up, which was followed by sophomore Alex Hampton (Baldwin, N.Y.) knocking down a three-pointer to take a 32-30 lead. Guerriero scored another lay-up, while the Rams' Tori Arnao hit a free throw to change the game's score to 34-31 in favor of Molloy heading into the intermission.

The two clubs traded baskets back-and-forth starting off the second stanza. Molloy held the lead until the 9:59 mark when Philadelphia's Monica Schacker drained a jumpshot, giving the Rams a 44-43 advantage. With 1:52 left in regulation, Padro nailed a three-pointer to give her team a 58-52 lead. The Rams kept going at it, scoring five straight points to cut its deficit to just one. Down the stretch, however, the Lions went 7-for-8 from the free throw line to seal the 67-60 triumph.

For Molloy, O'Connor, Padro and Jackson all had 11 points, while Hampton scored eight. On the glass, Guerriero led the team with eight boards, while juniors Nicole Arnone (Staten Island, N.Y.) and Megan Lonergan (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) grabbed seven each. Padro added five assists, while junior Allison Smith (Blairstown, N.J.) recorded four blocks.

For the Rams, Arnao had a double-double, scoring 14 points and pulling down 12 rebounds. Schacker also netted 14 to pace the contest. Young and Najah Jacobs scored 12 and 11 points, respectively.
