Box Score ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Nov. 2, 2013) - Needing a win to get into the East Coast Conference playoffs, the Dowling College women's soccer team fell to Molloy College, which played spoiler on Saturday afternoon at the Dean G. Skelos Sports Complex in Rockville Centre, N.Y. The two clubs played to a 1-1 draw after two overtime periods.
The Lions finish their 2013 campaign with an overall record of 3-13-1, while Dowling's record on the season changed to 12-3-2.
In the 57th minute of the game, Molloy junior
Allison Sloper (Williston Park, N.Y.) cut by a defender and shot the ball into the lower left corner of the goal to give the Lions a 1-0 lead. The advantage would be short-lived as 15 minutes later, the Golden Lions' Ally Abruzzo found the equalizer. Molloy junior goalkeeper
Nicole DellaPorta (West Babylon, N.Y.) came out too far trying to defend against a breakaway ball.
The Golden Lions nearly scored that elusive second goal -- the one that would have put them in the ECC playoffs -- one minute into the final overtime period. Dowling fired off a shot that DellaPorta was just able to deflect with her fingertips as she dove to the right side of the goal.
In net, DellaPorta made six saves, while Dowling goalkeeper Melissa Guglielmo wasn't tested.
