(Nov. 15, 2013) - On Friday evening, the Molloy College women's basketball team was handed its first loss of the 2013 season when Dominican College bested the Lions, 80-69 at the Hennessey Center in Orangeburg, N.Y. in the First Annual Regina Rivera Memorial Tournament. With the win, the Chargers improved to 1-2 overall, while the Lions dropped to 2-1 on the young campaign.
The Lions jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead to start this game, with the Chargers then mirroring their opponents by scoring six of their own to tie the contest. With 14:41 remaining and the Lions up, 9-8, Dominican reeled off a 7-0 run to pull ahead, 15-9. The two squads kept things close over the ensuing five minutes. Sabrina Padro (Bronx, N.Y.) hit two foul shots before senior
Kelly Guerriero (Floral Park, N.Y.) drained a three-pointer to tie the game. Dominican would hold the lead for the rest of the way, hitting a highwater mark of nine points for the lead. The Chargers went into the intermission ahead, 38-31, as Molloy freshman
Aliyah McDonald (Hempstead, N.Y.) sunk a jumper at the buzzer.
The beginning of the second half wasn't kind to the Lions as Dominican started the period on an 18-6 run. That burst lasted until the 12:41 mark. After being down by as many as 20 points, the Lions remarkably cut their deficit to as low as eight in the latter part of the second stanza. However, it wouldn't be enough as the Chargers won, 80-69.
For Molloy, Guerriero and junior
Megan Lonergan (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) tied for the team-high with 15 points each, while McDonald had 14 and Padro scored 10. Junior
Nicole Arnone (Staten Island, N.Y.) had six rebounds, while Lonergan and sophomore
Kimani Jackson (Dix Hills, N.Y.) had two steals each. From behind the arc, Guerriero went 4-for-6, while Lonergan shot an impressive 7-for-9 from the floor.
The Chargers were led by KC Jentzen who scored 29 points, while LaShonda Hathorne and Nicole Welton had 13 each. Jentzen grabbed 15 boards for the double-double. Jacqueline Rywalt dished out six assists and scored six points.
