Box Score ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Oct. 10, 2013) - Nobody would have thought that the game-winning goal would be scored in the fifth minute of Thursday night's East Coast Conference women's soccer battle between the New York Institute of Technology and host-Molloy College. However, that was the case and the Lions were fortunate enough to be on the good side of it as junior
Allison Sloper (Williston Park, N.Y.) found the back of the netting for the early 1-0 lead. Molloy would hold that edge in the ensuing 85 minutes enroute to improving its record to 2-9 overall and 2-3 in the ECC.
Following the defeat, the Bears slipped to 4-7-1 on the season and 1-5-0 in league play.
Freshman
Jessica Malone (Long Beach, N.Y.) fed the ball to Sloper who was in the box. The Williston Park native then gingerly placed the ball in the lower right corner, just past NYIT goalkeeper Cassie Betancourt. The tally was Sloper's third on the year.
Prior to the game, the women's soccer program honored its six graduating seniors with a special on-field presentation. The six seniors that were honored were:
Sami Saad (Valley Stream, N.Y.),
Nicole Valentine (Massapequa, N.Y.),
Natalie Meringolo (Huntington, N.Y.),
Jennifer Schmoll (Middle Village, N.Y.),
Katie Jacques (Copaigue, N.Y.), and
Tricia Zarro (Valley Stream, N.Y.). Zarro got the start between the pipes today for the Lions, and made the most of the opportunity. She made one save to record the clean sheet.
Offensively, Sloper had four of Molloy's eight shots on goal, while the Bears were only able to muster one as a team. Molloy's backline came up huge today, helping Zarro face just one shot.
For the Bears, Betancourt made seven saves. NYIT nearly had the equalizer in the 60th minute when Kathryn Boehmer fired a shot on an open goal, as Zarro was pulled to the side recovering from a play. Luckily for the Lions, they had a defender standing directly in the line of the ball. The Lions' back knocked down the shot with her torso and cleared it away.
Molloy outshot the Bears, 15-4 today.
Head Coach
Danny Longo and the Lions return to action on Saturday, Oct. 12 when they play at Caldwell College in Caldwell, New Jersey. The opening whistle is slated for 12 p.m.
