Box Score vs. New Haven - May 14, 2011
BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (May. 14, 2011) - On Friday, junior first baseman Carla Campagna (Floral Park, N.Y.) and sophomore catcher Katie Kraus (North Bellmore, N.Y.) drove in a pair of RBI apiece to lead the third-seeded Molloy College softball team past No. 7 seed University of New Haven by an 8-5 final in an NCAA Division II East Sub Regional game at the C.W. Post Softball Complex in Brookville, N.Y. With the victory, the Lions now get a re-match against yesterday's opponent, Caldwell College, in a loser's bracket tilt at 4:15 p.m.
Molloy broke out first in Bottom-2 with some two-out magic. Junior designated player Josette Cavallaro (North Babylon, N.Y.) turned on a two-strike pitch, and ripped it off the third-base bag, scoring Kraus from second to give the Lions an early 1-0 advantage. One inning later, the hit parade was on for Molloy as it pushed across a four-spot, extending the lead to 5-0 after three frames of play.
Sophomore outfielder Jeana Frey (Island Park, N.Y.) led things off with a bunt hit, and was sacrificed over by senior second baseman Alexandra Sydor (Glen Cove, N.Y.). Frey's opening base knock was not wasted though as sophomore third baseman Haley Calderwood (Lake Elsinore, Calif.) stroked an RBI single to right. In the next at-bat, Campagna battled back from 0-2 to draw the count full. She then drove a no-doubt, tape-measure shot beyond the left-field wall to make it a 4-0 game.
Soon after, Kraus joined the party, belting a pitch just over the left-field fence to stretch the Molloy lead once again. New Haven got one back in its part of the fifth on an RBI double off the bat of sophomore shortstop Christina Gelardi (Derby, Conn.), but the Lions fired back three runs in Bottom-5, mounting an 8-1 lead. Once again, Kraus was a key catalyst with an RBI on a double-play ball, while the other two runs came home on a Gelardi fielding error.
Still down 8-1 in the seventh, the Chargers put together an impressive rally, tallying four runs up with two out, led by a Gelardi three-run blast just inside the right-field pole off sophomore pitcher Kelley Jansen (Long Beach, N.Y.), who was chased out of the contest, and replaced by Butterworth to obtain the final out. The Bellmore product got senior second baseman Courtney Garland (East Meadow, N.Y.) to end the game with a strikeout, and Butterworth preserved the win for Molloy (42-13)
Butterworth picked up the victory, tossing 4.1 innings of shutout ball with four hits and one walk, while striking out 10. Junior pitcher Micah Stonesifer (Wichita Falls, Texas) took the loss for New Haven (34-19). She scattered 13 hits, eight runs (seven earned) and one walk with four strikeouts in six innings of work.
