WOMEN'S BASKETBALL ENDURES 49-41 SETBACK AGAINST C.W. POST

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Jan. 22, 2011) – Leading by a 24-21 count with under 16 minutes to go in the latter half, the Molloy College women's basketball team gave away an 8-1 burst to C.W. Post, which put the hosts in the driver's seat. The Pioneers never looked back from that point as they upended the Lions, 49-41, on Saturday at the Pratt Recreation Center in Brookville, N.Y. As a result, Molloy now stands at 4-14 overall and an East Coast Conference clip of 4-7, while C.W. Post improved to 8-8 and 6-5 against league opposition.

During the opening half, the Lions and Pioneers each traded runs, with the visitors heading into the break leading by a one-point clip (20-19). Trailing 3-2 with 18-plus minutes left in the period, C.W. Post earned a 10-2 run in a span of 2:18 to go ahead 12-5 at the 11:20 mark. Junior guard Felicia Joyner (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) started the streak with a jay. Sophomore center/forward Nicolette Marciniak (Brooklyn, N.Y.) followed with the ensuing five points. Senior guard Janea Aiken (St. Albans, N.Y.) capped it off with a trifecta.

Molloy responded with a 15-2 burst during the next six minutes to re-claim the advantage at 20-14. Sophomore guard Ashley Addison (East Hanover, N.J.) buried a pair of three-balls. Senior forward Caitlin Wheeler (Belle Harbor, N.Y.) put up a pair of lay-ups. Aiken, who ended up with 13 points, knocked down another triple, while senior forward Shatima Greer (Central Islip, N.Y.), who scored a game-best 16 points, drained a lay-up off a put-back effort to trim the deficit to one point for C.W. Post at the intermission.  

In the second half, the Pioneers found themselves down by three (24-21). They then went on an 8-1 run over a stint of five minutes to get the lead back for the first time since the 10:02 mark of the opening stanza, which the hosts never relinquished. Greer drained a pair of lay-ups. Joyner added a converted three-point play. The Lions managed to come within two points on three different occasions. However, C.W. Post recorded a 10-4 run during a four-minute stretch to secure the win, led by a five-point effort from Aiken in the spurt.

For Molloy, Addison netted 12 points. Graduate forward Delmara Reece (Yonkers, N.Y.) amassed 13 rebounds and eight points. She also dished three assists and swiped two steals. Wheeler accumulated nine points, seven rebounds, three assists and three blocks. Senior guard Scarlett Demchak (Merrick, N.Y.) totaled six points, five rebounds and a pair of steals. Freshman forward Jessica DeNicola (Massapequa, N.Y.) chipped in with five points. Sophomore guard Christina Marra (Dix Hills, N.Y.) had three points and a pair of rebounds.

Head Coach Tim O'Hagan and the Lions return to action on Wednesday night (Feb. 26) when they open up a short two-game homestand against ECC foe Mercy College.
