WOMEN'S TENNIS SUFFERS 9-0 DEFEAT AGAINST QUEENS

Box Score vs. Queens - September 15, 2010

BALDWIN, N.Y (Sept. 15, 2010) – On Wednesday afternoon, the Molloy College women's tennis team fell by a count of 9-0 to East Coast Conference rival Queens College at Baldwin Park in Baldwin, N.Y. Sophomore Jeana Frey (Island Park, N.Y.) lost a hard-fought 7-6, 6-3 decision to senior Laura Mocodeanu (Hyde Park, N.Y.), the reigning ECC Player of the Year, at No. 1 singles in the defeat. The Lions are now 1-4 overall, and 1-1 in league action. As for the Knights, they are 5-0, and 4-0 in the conference.

During the tie-breaker of the opening set, Mocodeanu was victorious against Frey by a score of 7-2. Sophomore Erika Goldsmith (Edison, N.J.) nearly blanked fellow sophomore Madeline Jurlano (Middle Village, N.Y.) in second singles, 6-1, 6-0. In the third position, freshman Nikki Gloria (Queens Village, N.Y.) won three games in a 6-2, 6-1 loss against senior Maria Mendes (Sao Paulo, Brazil). At fourth singles, freshman Gabrielle DiCroce (East Meadow, N.Y.) was shut out (6-0, 6-0) by junior Taylor Barber (Salt Lake City, Utah)

In fifth singles, junior Andrea Salvetova (Czech Republic) beat junior Alex Bonventre (West Babylon, N.Y.) in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0. Senior Annie Ayala (South Hempstead, N.Y.) wrapped up singles action with a 6-0, 6-0 loss to sophomore Daniela Celi (Orlando, Fla.). Then, in doubles flights, Goldsmith and Salvetova defeated the pair of Frey and DiCroce in the first position, 8-0. At No. 2 doubles, Gloria and Jurlano suffered an 8-1 loss versus Mendes and Mocodeanu. Ayala and Bonventre lost to Barber and Celi by the same score in the third slot.

Head Coach Terry Hirten and his team return to the court this Thursday (Sept. 16) when Molloy hosts New York Institute of Technology to Baldwin Park. First serve is scheduled for 3 p.m.
