NO. 4 MEN'S LACROSSE COMES UP SHORT IN 11-9 LOSS TO NO. 8 DOWLING IN ECC BATTLE

Box Score vs. Dowling - April 18, 2009

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Apr. 18, 2009) – On Saturday evening, the fourth-ranked Molloy College men's lacrosse team had its three-game winning streak put to an end by eighth-ranked Dowling College, 11-9, in an East Coast Conference match at the Dean G. Skelos Sports Complex in Rockville Centre, N.Y. With the loss, the Lions fell to an overall record of 9-2 and a league mark of 2-2. As for the Golden Lions, they returned to over .500 ball at 6-5. Dowling improved to 2-2 as well in the ECC.

Tied at 1-1 with just over a minute to go in the first quarter, the Golden Lions ripped off a four-goal burst, which went into the second quarter, to send themselves a 5-1 advantage with 13:20 left in the half. Junior attackman John McClure (Brampton, Ontario) got the first two goals. Junior defenseman Joe Biondolillo (Holtsville, N.Y.) followed with a marker on an assist from McClure. Junior attackman Kyle O'Brien (Whitby, Ontario) capped it off. Freshman defenseman Matthew Lauria (Babylon, N.Y.) was tabbed with the assist.

Following a man-up score by Lions' junior midfielder Matt Dolan (Plainedge, N.Y.) at the 12:07 mark, Dowling notched another pair before the end of the half to go into the intermission up 7-2. Once again, it was McClure that sparked the spurt as he scored both goals – one of which came in even strength, while the other came with an extra-man opportunity. McClure closed out the night with six points on four goals and two assists.

Molloy kicked off the latter stanza with three straight man-up markers. Dolan struck the back of the cage twice, while freshman attackman Ryan Kudlek (Oceanside, N.Y.) got one as well. Senior midfielder Keith Galante (Plainedge, N.Y.) was credited with two of the three assists. But, Dowling answered with three of their own. That gave it back the five-score margin at 10-5 with 12:24 remaining. Sophomore attackman Redmond Killpack (Lewes, Del.) and junior midfielder Brandon Bergersen (Severn, Md.) had a goal each.

Soon after, the Lions trailed 11-6 with just over 10 minutes to go in regulation. They tried to rally, but were not able to make the comeback as true as the score read 11-9 at the end. Galante registered two goals and one assist. Dolan added an even-strength tally. Sophomore attackman Ryan Bohlert (East Patchogue, N.Y.) recorded an assist on Galante's first goal, which came in an extra-man opportunity at the 9:40 juncture.

Galante collected six points in his showing on three goals and three assists. Dolan totaled four goals and one assist for five points. Kudlek added two points (1 G, 1 A). Senior midfielder Peter Bonelli (Commack, N.Y.) won 15 faceoffs and 13 ground balls. Senior defenseman Guy Eccher (West Islip, N.Y.) and sophomore defenseman Joe Vissichelli (Hicksville, N.Y.) notched four ground balls apiece. Senior goalie Robert Humann (Hicksville, N.Y.) made 12 saves between the pipes and got three ground balls.

For Dowling, O'Brien amassed five points on two goals and three assists. Killpack earned two goals and one assist for three points. Senior midfielder Thomas Stellwagen (Farmingville, N.Y.) raked nine faceoffs and seven ground balls. Biondolillo had five ground balls and two caused turnovers. Junior defenseman Kyle Rubisch (Brampton, Ontario) picked up five ground balls. Sophomore goalie Ryan Dougherty (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) turned aside a game-high 19 shots. He also claimed four ground balls.

Head Coach Joe Catalanotti and the Lions return to action this Saturday when they open up a two-game road trip to close out the regular season in Brookville, N.Y. against No. 2 C.W. Post. The opening faceoff is slated for noon.
