ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. - The
Molloy College women's lacrosse team advances to the 2008 ECAC
Championship game after defeating the Lions of Georgian Court
University on May 9, 2008 at the Dean G. Skelos Sports
Complex. The Lions finish their season with an 11-5 overall
record, while the Lady Lions now hold a 10-6 overall record and
will face the Golden Lions of Dowling College in the ECAC
Championship game on May 10. The Championship game will be
held at 11:00 a.m. by Dowling College, the number one seed in the
tournament.
Sophomore Kristina Wargo (Hicksville, N.Y.)
began the scoring when she notched a goal as just 17 seconds came
off the clock and Molloy took the 1-0 lead. A little over a
minute later, Georgian Court tied the score at one when sophomore
Allison Abbate (Oceanport, N.J.) put one between
the pipes. A goal by sophomore Natalie Bermudez (Toms
River, N.J.) put the Lions ahead by one (2-1).
Molloy did not score again till the 15th minute when
freshman Hayley Lacey (Levittown, N.Y.) and
sophomore Kristie Sosnowski (Massapequa Park,
N.Y.) each recorded a goal and gave the Lady Lions a 3-2
advantage. During the final minutes of the first half, Molloy
and Georgian Court traded goals and the Lady Lions headed into
halftime with the one goal edge (6-5).
Two minutes into the second half, Molloy took a 7-5 lead after
sophomore Lori Sollitto (Wantagh, N.Y.) netted a
goal. The Lady Lions pulled ahead by four goals (9-5) as
junior Mary Beth Ahern (Massapequa, N.Y.) and
sophomore Rebecca LaFlare (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) each
put one past Georgian Court's goalkeeper. With just under ten
minutes left in the game, Bermudez scored her
second goal of the game and cut Georgian Court's deficit to three
(9-6). However, in the final seven minutes, Molloy and
Georgian Court each placed two more goals to their total and the
Lady Lions came away with the 11-8 victory.
Wargo led the Lady Lions with three goals and
an assist, while Brady finished the game with two
goals and an assist. Sollitto added two
goals and Lacey pitched in with a goal and two
assists for Molloy. Georgian Court was led by
Bermudez and Abbate who each had
three goals during the game. Junior Alicia Frisch
(Lindenhurst, N.Y.) recorded six saves for Molloy, while
sophomore Christine Latteri (West Long Branch,
N.J.) made 13 saves in net for the Lions.
